A spring that's been baking on a west-facing wall for three decades doesn't fail gently, it goes at the worst moment, usually with the door half up and a car underneath it.

Doing It Yourself

Disconnecting the opener with the manual release so you can lift the door by hand is fine and often necessary if you're stuck with a car trapped inside. Clearing debris from the track, or checking that nothing's blocking the photo-eye sensors near the bottom of the track, is fine too.

What isn't worth trying: touching a torsion spring under tension, or removing cables while the door is loaded. On a door with a broken spring, the opposite spring is still holding real force, and on a 1980s-era door that's had thirty-plus years of heat cycling, the metal around the mounting hardware can be more fatigued than it looks. We'd rather drive the 18 miles and find out you didn't need us than get a call about an injury. If in doubt, leave it down and leave it alone.

What the Fix Involves

On arrival we check the springs first, since that's what fails most on doors from this era, then the cables, rollers, and the opener's force settings, heat-stressed circuit boards in older openers sometimes need a reset or a swap, not just a spring job. We test the balance of the door by hand before we touch the opener, because a door that's out of balance will keep chewing through openers and cables no matter how many parts we replace.

We don't push replacement on a door that's fixable. If the panels are sound and the track is straight, a spring and roller job gets a mid-1980s door running like it should for years yet. If the panels are rusted through or the track's been bent past true, we'll say so and talk replacement instead of patching something that'll fail again in six months.
